Tuesday, January 24th the Joan of Arc Academy percussion group WHACK! had their television debut on Rogers' Morning Show. Sophie, Cassidy, Laura, Claire, Emma, Annabelle and their conductor - Dr. Kelly-Marie Murphy performed splendidly. Joan of Arc Academy got a couple of plugs as well! We are pleased to announce that a new Smart Board has been installed in Ms. Forestell's classroom, where she teaches Mathematics in grades 6, 7 and 8 and Science in grades 7 and 8. This was made possible with the profits from the bake sale and generous donations in lieu of Christmas gifts to the teacher by the grade 5 parents. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this superb acquisition for our intermediate level students.

Joan of Arc Academy graduate Kate Ashwood won "The Power of the Girl 2011" award from Free the Children - Children helping children through education for her exceptional fund-raising efforts. "Girls in Kenya don't necessarily have the opportunities me and my friends have in North America," says Kate. "I...truly hope that by helping to give these girls an opportunity to get an education, they can show that they also have the power of a girl!" Part of Kate's award included a trip to Kenya where she met children from Kisaruni who had been helped by Free the Children.

In February every year, the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation or PGL French dictation of 200 words takes place in schools across Canada and at Joan of Arc Academy. The Dictée PGL raises funds to support access to basic education in countries where the Foundation has been working for more than 30 years. Grade 8 students Rishika Aggarwal and Laura Song scored 100% in the 2010 Dictée PGL.

We wish to express our gratitude to the firm Bulger Young for their generous monetary gift. It has been used to purchase a one-year Mathletics license for all students from Grade 5 to 8. Mathletics is a web-based learning program that helps students improve their math skills while having fun. Thank you Bulger Young!

Great news! The grade 3 girls will be able to take advantage of a Smartboard in their classroom. A generous parent has donated funds to finance its purchase, as well as the acquisition of several French reading books. This parent wishes to remain anonymous. We are most grateful for his donation that will benefit present and future Joan of Arc Academy students.

Thank you, thank you to the owners of Isobel cookies Heather and Bruce Holbrook. Since 2008, Isobel and Co. has donated hundreds of their scrumptious, handmade cookies to Joan of Arc Academy to help our students raise funds. To date, the Holbrook's generous donations to the Academy have raised over $10,000!

Grade 3 and grade 6 English teacher Ms. Sabine Neubert arranged for Opera Lyra to present its humorous play, "The Barber of Bytown." As they do every year, our students got a big laugh out of the Opera Lyra performance.
 
L'enseignante d'English de 3e et 6e année, Madame Sabine Neubert, a fait des démarches auprès de l'Opera Lyra (www.operalyra.ca) pour que la troupe vienne nous présenter sa pièce humoristique « The Barber of Bytown ». Comme chaque année, nos élèves se sont bien amusées lors de la présentation de l'Opera Lyra.

On October 11th, the Grade 5 students had the privilege of welcoming to their classroom a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, as well as former federal minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Ms. Sheila Copps. The students are studying the Canadian election process in sciences sociales. Ms. Copps prompted an informative and interesting discussion demonstrating how people make political choices.

On November 4th, under the guidance of their trainer/gym teacher Ms. Rafferty, Joan of Arc Academy runners will begin training for the annual 5 km Santa Shuffle Fun Run. Please mark your calendars and come cheer for the girls on Saturday, December 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at Tunney's Pasture. Go team go!

The 5 km Santa Shuffle Run will take place on December 3rd, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Tumey's Pasture in Ottawa. As part of the running unit, the grade 8 class will participate in the Santa Shuffle 5 km race, which is being coordinated by the Ottawa Running Room and the Salvation Army. The girls will make this a team effort and collect donations. Each $100 raised will feed one family at Christmas. As the entry deadline is November 4th, registration forms and registration fees of $20 per participant need to be returned to school by November 2nd. The Joan of Arc Academy computer lab has brand new desktop computers equipped with Intel core i-5 processors and Microsoft Windows 7.

As they do every year, Grades 3, 4 and 5 will run with all their might at the annual Pumpkin Run in South Nepean Park. Each girl goes home with a small pumpkin at the end of this fun event.

Joan of Arc Academy's Afterschool piano teacher, Dr. Kelly-Marie Murphy, is an internationally renowned composer, and she has won, among other awards, the Concert Artists Guild competition. On November 9th, Dr. Murphy will be in Carnegie Hall to hear and be recognized for her winning composition "Dark Energy" as played by the remarkably successful Linden String Quartet.

Election Day at Joan of Arc Academy: Yesterday, as a new government was being elected in Ontario, students from Grade 3 to Grade 8 voted to elect our Head Girl for the 2011-2012 school year. Congratulations to our new Head Girl, Kameela Alibhai! We have no doubt that you will do an excellent job.

The All Science Challenge is a unique, science enrichment, team-based event that offers students in Grades 6-8 the opportunity to prepare together in small, school-based teams, and then they meet for a one-day, highly charged science competition.....more

Joan of Arc Academy welcomes back child psychologist, author and entertaining speaker Dr.Maggie Mamen for a presentation for parents, Building Resilient Children on Wednesday, May 18th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Dr.Mamen draws from her professional interactions with children and their parents, her research and her practical experience in raising three children. Always informative, down-to-earth and funny - Dr. Maggie Mamen is a favourite of parents and children everywhere. This FREE presentation is open to the public. Joan of Arc Academy is extremely proud of the 16 girls in our Grade 8 class. The students were accepted at every high school they applied to: Ashbury, Bell, Canterbury, Colonel By, Elmwood, Franco-Ouest, John McCrae, Lisgar, Nepean, and Sir Robert Borden, and were offered scholarships totalling $94,500. The girls applied to and were accepted into gifted programs, advanced athletic and arts programs, as well as International Baccalaureate programs in both French and English. Congratulations, girls!

For the first time in Joan of Arc Academy history, the Primary Choir (Grades 3-4-5) has been asked to represent the National Capital Region at the Ontario Music Festivals Associations, Provincial Finals Competition 2011. We have been chosen out of many choirs to enter this prestigious Festival. Our choir stays at school for this as a recording is sent to the festival.This is a summer festival. We will not receive results until late July

Junior Choir (Grades 3-4-5) 1st Place Mark of 86

With our first place win, our girls brought home the John G. Sutherland Trophy that we had won in2003. The trophy is displayed in the front entrance hall, in the same location as the teachers' and other personnel's pictures. The certificates will be framed, and then hung in the hallway with the others we have won over the years.

The Ottawa Regional Science Fair was held this past weekend, on April 2nd, at Carleton University, where over 200 projects were on display. Joan of Arc Academy sent ten grade 7 and 8 students to present their science fair projects in various categories within the junior division and was proud to come back with a total of ten awards! For the third year in a row, one of our students will represent the region at the Nationals. Two years ago, Richika Aggarwaal represented us and last year, our headgirl, Brittany Vandenberg won a secound place at the national level. This year, congratulations to Stacy Glasberg who will be at the national competition...JOA Winners
